A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the month's conclusion increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the president had been taken into custody.

One account, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that users put the odds of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," stated an industry expert.

Several of other traders also made significant sums from similar wagers.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

A new rule put forward on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from elections to politics.

Prediction markets were examined under the last presidential term. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
