Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
