The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
