The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
